Alexa Barreras is a 23-year-old multi-media artist based in Carmel, Indiana. She is primarily a painter and has recently started focusing on digital art as well. Alexa is originally from Caguas, Puerto Rico; her family was relocated to Carmel due to her mom’s job in December of 2012, when she was just 10 years old. As instilled by her parents from a young age, Alexa is very connected to her heritage. Through her found Boricua family in Carmel, to her family back in Puerto Rico, who she visits often, she has a strong connection to her culture that has carried over into other aspects of her life, such as her time at Indiana University, where she graduated from last year. At IU, Alexa majored in Studio Art and minored in French and Art History. She was also on the executive board of IU’s Puerto Rican Student Association. Alexa’s work primarily focuses on constructing colorful and dynamic pictures through found and personal photos, as well as through developing color relationships. She is heavily inspired by vibrant colors, playful compositions, music, fashion, nature, and much more. Recently, her work has been highlighted in various Hispanic Heritage Month events such as city of Carmel’s inaugural Hispanic Heritage month celebration: Dia de la Familia, as well as WEPA! At Proper Art Gallery in Indianapolis. She is very grateful to have been a part of this year’s LAMP cohort and is looking forward to showing more of her art in the future. She hopes you’ll follow along to see what is to come!
